Abu Mansur Muhammad al-Hanafi? al-Matiridy as-Samarkandi a scholar and philosopher, the founder of the? ?Maturidy? branch in kalam (Muslim theology), and expert in fiqh(Muslim jurisprudence) was born in 870 in the small town near Samarkand named Madrid. At first he studiedat the village school and then continued in the madrasah.
Many pupils went to him, and the Imam al-Maturidy taught them in his home?s garden. His influence in the scientific world of the Muslim East very high. The most famous of his followers was Abul Muin Nasafi(XI cent.) who continuedtaching ?moturidiya?.
Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidy died in 944 and was buried in the cemetery Chakardiza in Samarkand, where the mausoleum was built and it was highly respected by people. According to legend, more than 3,000 theologians were buried there. The mauseloum was destroyed in 1930s.
In 2000, the 1,130th anniversary of the scientist?s birth date was widely celebrated in Uzbekistan. International forums were held where scientists from different countries presented their researches on the heritage of Al ? Maturidy.
At the same time, in 2000, at the initiative of President of Uzbekistan Islam Kar4imov, on the ruins of the mausoleum, an architectural complex was built in the center of which the mausoleum of the scientist stands. During the construction of this monument the best traditions of Uzbek national architecture were used.? The architectural complex was built by the architect Rahmatullo Salakhutdinov and co-authored with Egamberdi? Nurullayev. Folk artists from Samarkand such as Mirumar Asadov, Matlub Makhmudov, Yokub Tagirov, Tashpulat Atoev participated in construction works. Interiors are made by Amriddin Nadjmiddinov.
In external and internal facing mosaics, majolica, ganj are used. On the tombstone of white marble, saying of Imam al-Maturidy are carved.
West of the mausoleum is there is a low dome construction-dakhma of sayyids(descendants of the Prophet Muhammad )? that Amir Timur brought from Heart and Mashhad. To the north of the mausoleum there is sufa? (elevation ) with tombstones of IX-XVII centuries. To the south-west of the mausoleum in the garden there is a rotunda with the tomb of the famous legal scholar and author of books on Islamic jurisprudence ?Al-Hidaya?, Burhaneddin al-Margilani.
